2009 Northeast Students For Liberty Conference

Taking place on the historic campus of Harvard University, the 2009 Northeast Students For Liberty Conference will be an opportunity for all liberty enthusiasts in the Northeast to spend a full day soaking in the ideal of liberty. From 8:30 am to 8:30 pm, you will get a chance to hear great speeches from leading scholars of liberty, engage with activists of the liberty movement, and meet student leaders of liberty.

Come to the conference to gain the concrete resources you need to be an integral part and leader of the burgeoning liberty movement on your own campus, be introduced to the variety of internship and employment opportunities in the community of liberty enthusiasts, or network with like-minded friends and activists.

Harvard University is home to the Harvard Libertarian Forum, who this year host the second ever Students For Liberty Northeast Regional Conference.

This year’s conference will take place in two locations. From 8:30 am – 6:30 pm, the conference will convene in Sever Hall, Room 113. Dinner and the evening’s events will take place from 6:45 – 11:00 pm in SOCH 104 (the Student Organization Center at Hilles, Room 104).

- S P E A K E R S -

Peter Schiff, President and Chief Global Strategist of Euro-Pacific Capital. Mr. Schiff is one of the few investment advisors to have correctly called the current bear market before it began. His accurate forecasts on the U.S. stock market, economy, real estate, the mortgage meltdown, credit crunch, subprime debacle, commodities, gold and the dollar, have brought him great reknown. An economic adviser for Ron Paul’s campaign in 2008, he is currently running for the Republican nomination in his home state of Connecticut for the 2010 US Senate election.

Professor Jeffrey Miron, Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Economics at Harvard University and Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute. Dr. Jeffrey Miron is an expert in the economics of libertarianism, with particular emphasis on the economics of illegal drugs. Miron has served on the faculty at the University of Michigan and as a visiting professor at the Sloan School of Management, M.I.T. and the Department of Economics, Harvard University. From 1992-1998, he was chairman of the Department of Economics at Boston University. His blog, Libertarianism, from A to Z, provides a libertarian perspective to current issues in public policy.

Dr. Aeon Skoble, distinguished Professor of Philosophy at Bridgewater State College. Professor Skoble’s main research in moral and political philosophy includes theories of rights, the nature and justification of authority, virtue ethics, practical reason and moral psychology, just-war theory, classical theories of happiness, and theories of legal interpretation. He is the author of Deleting the State: An Argument About Government (Open Court, 2008), as well as many essays in scholarly and popular journals.

Dr. Jim Stergios, Executive Director of the Pioneer Institute. Jim Stergios was Undersecretary for Policy in the Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs, where he drove the efforts behind smart growth and regulatory and permit reform. He is now leading the Pioneer Institute’s research effort to establish public policy that respects individual freedom and responsibility, prosperity, and limited, accountable government in Massachusetts.

Jack Cole, Executive Director, Law Enforcement Against Prohibition. Officer Jack Cole retired as a Detective Lieutenant after a 26-year career with the New Jersey State Police, where his investigations spanned the spectrum of possible cases, from street drug users and mid-level drug dealers in New Jersey to international “billion-dollar” drug trafficking organizations. Currently writing his dissertation for the Public Policy Ph.D. Program at the University of Massachusetts, his major focus is on the issues of race and gender bias, brutality and corruption in law enforcement.

Maria Snegovaya, Russian student liberty activist. Winner of the the 2008 Cato Institute Summer Essay Competition, Maria is a student at the State University Higher School of Economics in Russia. In 2008, she was arrested by the police for participating in a peaceful anti-Putin demonstration as part of her efforts to promote civil rights in Russia. Her research is devoted to examining the cultural and institutional problems that are preventing Russia from choosing a liberal democratic way of development.

Sean Ryan, Boston-born liberty activist and 2009 candidate for Boston City Council. Sean Ryan serves as the Massachusetts CD-8 coordinator for the Campaign for Liberty and the Massachusetts Liberty Preservation Association. He is a frequent guest speaker at tea parties and monetary reform rallies. On September 22nd, Sean garnered 6654 votes in a non-partisan preliminary election for Boston City Council, after running on a platform of decentralized government and market-based solution to social problems.
