Hosted by Wake Forest Young Americans for Liberty, the Inaugural 2009 Southern Students for Liberty Regional Conference is set to host some of the most esteemed liberty activists, scholars, and entrepreneurs of the liberty movement. The conference will, without a shadow of doubt, be a rallying point for liberty loving students across the Southern region of the U.S.  Please check out the conference, see all the amazing items we have to offer you, then click the registration link and register today! This conference is the must attend event of the fall-semester;  you’ll be hearing from and meeting some of the most exciting people in the liberty movement. Additionally, three free-to-you meals and getting away from all the statism can’t be all that bad either!

***Please plan to arrive no later than the evening of Friday, October 23rd and depart no sooner than Sunday, October 25th. The conference will begin promptly at 8:00AM (with an optional breakfast buffet beginning at 7:45 am) on October 24th and we will end around 6pm for dinner and an evening social & concert event that will take us all the way through midnight!

Representing the South, there is likely not a better candidate to host the event than Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC. The picturesque campus provides an atmosphere certainly conducive to a lively conference of this magnitude and, with one of the most active student liberty groups in the United States, the conference promises to be the most engaging event for liberty in 2009. The Conference itself will take place in Benson University Center, Pugh Auditorium on the Wake Forest campus. The conference will last all day and registrants are required to stay for the entire days event. Please remember to show up to the event itself at no later than 7:45am to get your conference binder, name tag, and grab a bite to eat before the conference begins. The final speakers list for the Southern SFL Conference is finally set to go. You will hear from some of the most outstanding people in the broader liberty movement and have the opportunity to walk away with not only profound knowledge of the philosophy of liberty, but also leave with leadership skills to spread the message in your area in an effective, engaging, yet cordial manner.

  1. Fred L. Smith, Jr.: (Closing Keynote) Founder and President of the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI), a free market public policy group established in 1984. Mr. Smith combines intellectual and strategic analysis of complex policy issues ranging from the environment to corporate governance with an informative and entertaining presentation style. Well-known in academic and professional circles, Mr. Smith is a popular speaker at universities and conferences around the world. Mr. Smith is also a frequent guest on national television and radio programs to discuss and debate regulatory initiatives and topical policy issues. Providing both analytical and political insights, he has appeared on CNN’s “Crossfire,” PBS’s “News Hour with Jim Lehrer” and “Now with Bill Moyers,” ABC’s “20/20” and “This Week,” NPR’s “Talk of the Nation” and “The Diane Rehm Show,” and “The G. Gordon Liddy Show,” among many others. Conference Keynote Speaker
  2. John Allison: (Morning Keynote) Former Chairman and CEO, BB&T Bank. Mr. John Allison is considered one the top businessmen in the United States. Under his  watch, on the New York Stock Exchange, BB&T Bank boasted over $136 billion in managed assets, became the 14th largest financial institution in the United States, and is considered as one of the most successful banks in the United States as far as long term and sustainable growth is concerned. As testimony to this characterization, BB&T Bank was one of the very few banks who rejected the financial bailouts and Mr. Allison was highly critical of the TARP program. Mr. Allison will be delivering the very valuable morning keynote address that covers leadership for students and how to be a leader.
  3. Dr. Mike Beitler: Host of the radio-show Free Markets, author of Rational Individualism and Strategic Organizational Change, and current professor at University of North Carolina Greensboro where he holds a seat in the Bryan School of Business and Economics.
  4. BJ Lawson: 2008 Congressional candidate, North Carolina’s 4th District who was one of the only 2008 Congressional candidates endorsed by Dr. Ron Paul.
  5. Dr. James Lark, III: Former Libertarian National Committee Chairman for the Libertarian Party, 2000-2002 and current Adviser to UVA’s Liberty Coalition.
  6. Dr. Brandon Turner: Noted classical liberal scholar, Institute for Humane Studies Graduate Research Fellow, and newly appointed professor at the Clemson Institute for the Study of Capitalism.
  7. Steve Sweet: Mr. Sweet is a program coordinator for marketing and recruiting for the Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation.  He attended Grove City College where he graduated in 2007 with degrees in communication and political science. Mr Sweet will be talking about Market Based Management© and the Koch Associate and Internship Programs (KAP & KAP).
  8. Adam Kissel: Mr. Kissel graduated from Harvard University and from the University of Chicago, where he served as Student Liaison to the Board of Trustees and earned a master’s degree from the Committee on Social Thought. His academic interests include the history and theory of liberal education, the history and theory of rhetoric, and rhetoric’s relationship with philosophy. He also has served as a professional editor for Nobel laureate James Heckman and for faculty in a variety of disciplines. He will be speaking on a panel representing FIRE, the foremost advocacy and legal group for free-speech on campuses across the U.S.
  9. Jenna Ashley Robinson: Campus Outreach Coordinator for The John W. Pope Center for Higher Education Policy She is also a graduate of the Koch Associates Program (KAP).
  10. Ben Stafford: Ben Stafford is the Director of Programs for FEE, the Foundation for Economic Education. The Foundation for Economic Education (FEE), one of the oldest free-market organizations in the United States, was founded in 1946 by Leonard E. Read to study and advance the freedom philosophy. FEE’s mission is to offer the most consistent case for the “first principles” of freedom: the sanctity of private property, individual liberty, the rule of law, the free market, and the moral superiority of individual choice and responsibility over coercion.
  11. Allison Gibbs: Outreach Director for the Campaign for Liberty and the Founder & President of the Ladies of Liberty Alliance (LOLA).
  12. Christopher Thrasher: Political Director to Free & Equal, a non-partisan election reform and activist organization dedicated to improving ballot access laws in the United States.
  13. Jordan Page: Multi-talented musician, rock artist, classical guitarist, and singer/songwriter to perform some of his hit songs such as “Pendulum,” “Listen,” and “War-Machine.”

As mentioned previously, at the conference there will be a one-hour long “liberty power hour” in which organizations can table to present materials and information to students regarding their organizations and causes.
